Designing something that looks right and works requires discipline.
As such we employ a clearly defined process as we approach the design of your web site.
Before you start
(i) Make sure have clearly defined objectives and practical strategies for achieving those objectives, and that you know what visitor groups you are targetting (and yes, we can help you with that).
(ii) Assemble all of the material you use to present your organisation to customers / the public
- stationery: business cards, letterhead etc
- marketing materials: brochures, catalogues etc
- advertising: copies of any advertising undertaken
- physical presence: photographs of signage, office / retail premises etc
(iii) Assess the visual impact your (existing or envisaged) website has (or should have) relative to:
- the other ways in which you present yourself visually (material collected above), and
- your targeted website users (defined in step i above) and what their expectations are likely to be.
Design the site, then design the pages
Remember, the crucial issue here is the subconcious impact the visual presentation will have on the user - rather than whether or not it appeals to you personally (although these will be related if your website is presenting your individual skills a visual arena).
1. Develop information architecture and navigation system
2. Determine and specify interactive functionality
3. Develop initial content (copy)
4. Design graphic theme, page layout, colour scheme
5. Finalise text and graphic design
6. Client sign-off: content and visual treatment - ready for coding.
The most common mistake is to start with step 4 - page design, resulting in a (possibly attractive but) useless website. With Binary Business that will never happen.
